Office of Research and Graduate Studies (ORGS)

We provide leadership in research and graduate and professional education at the University of the Incarnate Word. It is the home of the Director of Graduate Studies, the Director of Research Operations, the Institutional Research Official, and Sponsored Programs. We collaborate with faculty and business offices to provide strategic direction, support, and administrative oversight of research, extramural funding and post-baccalaureate education at UIW.

Research

The Office of Research and Graduate Studies (ORGS) administers the human research protection program (HRPP) at UIW. It provides administrative support to the University of the Incarnate Word’s Human Subjects Institutional Review Board (IRB). The HRPP and IRB ensure University compliance with federal, state, local and University regulations concerning human subjects research.

The University Research Council (URC) exists to support the promotion and development of research and other creative and scholarly activity at the University of the Incarnate Word. Its role is to advise the Office of Research and Graduate Studies regarding research development at the University. The council identifies the needs of the faculty, students and other researchers; analyzes services, policies and procedures that affect research; and makes recommendations that, in its view, will facilitate the research process and research productivity at the University.

A graduate assistant is a graduate student who is hired by the University of the Incarnate Word to assist faculty or administrators with their respective duties.

Graduate assistants are graduate students, first and foremost. Graduate assistantships provide financial assistance and educational and professional developmental opportunities for graduate students. Graduate assistants support the University in its teaching, research, administrative and service missions.

Eligibility

Open to full-time and part-time graduate students who are enrolled in their programs as defined by enrollment policy, who are in good academic standing and who satisfy continuous enrollment policies. Other eligibility conditions may be applied depending on the type and location of work performed. If the student’s GPA falls below a 3.0 during any portion of the academic year, the student may be terminated by the department from the assistantship during that academic year. Students employed by the University in faculty (including adjunct faculty appointments) or staff positions are not eligible for assistantships. Graduate assistants may not concurrently work for more than one department/school/ college regardless of funding type.
